Five-axis CNC machining is a key component of CNC machining. This technology has been widely used in high-precision equipment manufacturing industries such as automotive, light industry, medical, shipbuilding, aerospace, and aviation. In traditional mold machining, three-axis machining centers and vertical machining centers are commonly used for cutting workpieces. With the continuous development of mold machining technology in China, some shortcomings of traditional three-axis machining centers and vertical machining centers have gradually emerged. For example, ball-nose end mills are currently commonly used cutting tools in mold machining. The benefits of using ball-nose end mills in mold machining are self-evident. However, when used on a vertical machining center, the bottom cutting speed is zero, and the surface finish is poor. If a five-axis machining center is used for mold machining, these defects can be completely eliminated.
In five-axis machining, the use of flat-bottom end mills to maintain a perpendicular position on complex mold surfaces greatly helps reduce machining time. Based on the principles of five-axis machining centers, it is also suitable for angular side milling, eliminating the rib-like patterns caused by ball-nose end mills and resulting in a more ideal mold surface quality, thereby reducing costs. It also reduces the manual work required for cutting and cleaning the mold surface, significantly lowering costs.
Five-axis machining technology allows for the repositioning of workpieces at complex angles as required by the workpiece's challenges, eliminating the need for multiple clamping and adjustments, which not only saves time but also greatly reduces the occurrence of errors. It also saves a considerable amount of cost in installing workpiece fixtures, and the CNC machine can also handle the machining of complex parts! For example, drilling, finishing, and cavity machining on complex surfaces are impossible to achieve with traditional machining methods.
The cutting tools commonly used in five-axis machining are relatively short, allowing for the machining of all parts in one pass. In contrast, traditional three-axis machining may require re-clamping or the use of very long cutting tools, which takes more time. With five-axis machining, internal mold production can be carried out, and the part surface quality is also excellent.
