A machining center is a type of machine tool that can complete processing on five faces of a workpiece within one clamping operation. A five-axis machining center is a standard five-axis machining center. It mainly includes two categories:

1. Structural Differences

The five-axis machining center selects two rotational axes in addition to the xyz axes. When the x and y axes are combined with the a and b rotational axes, a c axis can also be configured on the z axis, depending on the actual customer requirements. A five-axis machining center consists of three linear axes and two rotational axes. Basically, most machining centers can be assembled into five-axis machining centers.

A five-face machining center is a very special type of machining center that combines the characteristics of a column machining center and a vertical machining center. That is, the milling head of a five-face machining center can be detached, and depending on the angle of the milling head, it is essentially a type of gantry machining center.

1. Differences in Processing Range

In addition to being a five-axis machining center and a five-face machining center, the most significant difference lies in the processing categories. A five-axis machining center is not only applied in industries such as aviation, aerospace, defense, high-precision equipment, and high-precision medical devices, but is also widely used in the civilian mold manufacturing industry, such as wooden template manufacturing, bathroom edge processing, automotive interior trim processing, foam mold processing, simple European-style furniture, solid wood chairs, and more. A five-axis machining center is a new type of mechanical equipment for machining, capable of inclined and irregular processing in all spatial orientations. However, the parts that can be processed by a five-face machining center are relatively limited, mostly limited to shell parts in most cases, but it has the characteristics of a vertical machining center and is not a five-axis machining center.
