Five-axis machining is a collective term for five-face machining technology and five-axis simultaneous machining technology.
Five-face machining technology is used to process complex polyhedral parts in a single setup. All planar milling, drilling, and tapping operations, except for the reference surface, can be conveniently performed by adding rotational axes to the CNC lathe. Furthermore, when machining inclined surfaces, the tool or workpiece can be rotated to bring the tool closer to the component. By reducing the extension length of the tool on the working surface, the cutting capability and tool life can be enhanced, and spherical machining problems that cannot be solved by linear motion can also be addressed.
Another characteristic of five-face machining is that the rotational axes are only used for positioning within the measurement range and do not participate in the tool radius compensation movement of the cutting path. For example, a V-type engine cylinder liner uses an A/B-axis double-swivel vertical machining center. The machining of the V-shaped slopes and cylinder holes can be performed by A-axis swiveling, while the machining of the crankshaft bearing holes and thrust faces can be performed by B-axis rotation.
