A five-axis machining center (equipment) is a crucial part of CNC machining, and this technology has already been widely applied in industries such as shipbuilding, aerospace, automotive, light industry, medical equipment, and high-precision instrument manufacturing. In traditional mold processing, three-axis machining centers and vertical machining centers are commonly used for the cutting of workpieces. With the continuous development of mold processing technology in China, some shortcomings of traditional vertical machining centers and three-axis machining centers have gradually emerged. Currently, ball-nose end mills are widely used in mold processing. Although the benefits of using ball-nose end mills in mold processing are significant, if a vertical machining center is used, the bottom edge linear speed is zero, and the surface finish is poor. These issues can be completely overcome by using a five-axis machining center for mold processing. In this article, the author analyzes the advantages of five-axis machining centers in mold processing and discusses their applications in this field.

In five-axis machining, using a thick-bottomed end mill to maintain a perpendicular position to the complex mold surface can significantly reduce processing time. The basic principle of a five-axis machining center also allows for side milling of surfaces with angles, eliminating the rib-like texture caused by ball-nose end mills, resulting in a more ideal surface quality for the mold and reducing the need for manual cutting and handwork to improve the mold surface.

With five-axis machining technology, the need for multiple adjustments when repositioning workpieces at complex angles during clamping is eliminated, not only reducing time but also significantly reducing the deviations that occur. The substantial cost of fixtures required for installing workpieces is also saved, and the CNC machine ensures the processing of complex parts, such as drilling, finishing, and pocketing required for complex surfaces, which are impossible to achieve with traditional methods.
